Hand Surgery

Went to her for dupuytren's contracture - shouldve done better research. At consult she said she would operate and take all the disease in the one pretty bent finger. Having had this procedure done two other times at other places (different fingers) I mistakenly thought she meant what she said. Given her cosmetic surgery background i now get why her instinct was to opt for a cosmetic approach to the procedure. Once i was under, it was too late, she only took out a small portion of the disease to relieve contracture - going against the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommendations of eliminating all of it for the best chance of avoiding recurrence. As AAOS predicts, contracture came back within months in the finger she worked on in contrast to the other two operations done years before that have still not come back (to date). The finger she worked on has permanent nerve damage and the recurring contracture is causing painful arthritis in just that finger knuckle - i can barely close a fist. Post-op, i tried to ask her directly why didnt she take it all not long after the swelling went down but she became unavailable for comment. Several phone calls later, she sent someone to inform me Curttain felt the minimal approach was the way to go. I cant recommend anything good about this surgeon.

DONT USE DR CURTAIN IF YOU VALUE YOUR HAND
DO NOT USE Dr CURTAIN OR STANFORD HOSPITAL!!! Dr Curtain performed a trapezectomy on my dominant thumb almost a year ago for arthritis. She casted my hand too tightly after surgery and used a pain pump so I had no feeling in my hand. Regardless of my MANY phone calls for help, she refused to see me for nearly 3 weeks and Stanford’s staff refused to allow me to see another surgeon! My ulnar nerve was damaged in my elbow and wrist, I have CRPS for life, I still have frozen elbow and shoulder and only have partial use of my fingers. I’ve undergone 3 additional surgeries to try to fix my hand, elbow, and fingers at UCSF and have undergone almost a year of OT three days a week.

My son had a very traumatic work injury to his right hand. He has had to have numerous surgeries over the past two years. Dr. Curtin has done all of his surgeries. I can’t explain how phenomenal this woman is. She has been amazing at explaining everything. Every time we go in she takes her time to answer all of our questions and is very thorough. I would highly recommend her to anyone needing hand surgery.

Hands down the best surgeon ♥️ My son became paralyzed from a car accident to no fault of his own. Dr Curtin brought back mobility in my sons back, shoulder, and right arm. She did tell us that it would take time and 5 years later my son has full motion like he did before. She gave my son hope and I will forever be grateful for that.
